“Warnings On Rebellion”
Now lets recap from last time. Un-forgiveness is rebellion! Sin is rebellion. And God hates rebellion. The Lord is not playing around. I would like to add:
1 John 3:4
“Whoever commits sin also commits lawlessness, and sin is lawlessness.”
Jesus taught us to be ready for the kingdom of Heaven and His coming, which ever comes first. To be on the safe side of life, we are to be ready for both. Finally, lets get into this. Many people today when reading the Word of God, skimp over what seems to be insignificant words in the English language. Like for example: the word, “says.” In:
Hebrews 3:7-14 Warning Against Unbelief
“So, as the Holy Spirit says: “Today, if you hear His voice, do not harden your hearts as you did in the rebellion, during the time of testing in the desert, where your fathers tested and tried Me and for forty years saw what I did. That is why I was angry with that generation, and I said, ‘Their hearts are always going astray, and they have not known My ways.’ So I declared on oath in my anger, ‘They shall never enter My rest.’ ” See to it, brothers, that none of you has a sinful, unbelieving heart that turns away from the living God. But encourage one another daily, as long as it is called today, so that none of you may be hardened by sin’s deceitfulness.”
The word is an action word and means: the Lord is still saying, still warning. Not only to the Jews of yesterday and today, (which the Book of Hebrews, is a letter to the Jews. Hence the name: the Book of “Hebrews.” But it is also a word from the Lord to the Gentiles as well. The Book of Hebrews gives us examples what not to do, learning from another’s mistakes, as well as learning one’s victories. Even I skimp over words that seems to be insignificant, until the Lord had opened my eyes to minute details of His Word, and how the Word of God is carefully; meticulously; and anally written. Every jot and every tidle. Not only was it written carefully, But God Almighty Himself spoke this Word we have in book form, Called the “Holy Bible,” very carefully; meticulously; and anally, as well. Same thing with the word, “if.”
In: Hebrews 3:14&15
“We have come to share in Christ if we hold firmly till the end the confidence we had at first. As has just been said: “Today, if you hear His voice, do not harden your hearts as you did in the rebellion.”
So here as we just read, proof that one can lose salvation. This is just one of many Scriptures so far. For there are conditions for keeping salvation and in this Scripture here; “we have our share in Christ Jesus, if, we hold firmly till the end.” End of what? End our life, or end of time, what ever comes first. And what is our confidence? The Hope in Christ Jesus our Lord. The Gospel Message of Hope and eternal life which He has promised. Salvation. “If we hold firmly till the end the confidence we had at first.” He is our only source of salvation. The only source to the kingdom of Heaven. Which is through the Gospel of Hope, The Word of God. So lets go back to: Hebrews 3:7-11 to take a closer look at what not to do.
Hebrews 3:7-11 Warning Against Unbelief
“So, as the Holy Spirit says: “Today, if you hear His voice, do not harden your hearts as you did in the rebellion, during the time of testing in the desert, where your fathers tested and tried Me and for forty years saw what I did. That is why I was angry with that generation, and I said, ‘Their hearts are always going astray, and they have not known My ways.’ So I declared on oath in My anger, ‘They shall never enter My rest.’ “
Who are “they”? And what is the rebellion mentioned in these verses? The answer is the Jews of the Old Testament. For they are used here in nthe book of Hebrews by God Almighty as examples for us today. And even though the Book of Hebrews is a letter written to the Jews, of the time it was written, to the end of the world. It is also written for Gentiles of then, to the end of world as well. For there is no segregation in the whole Word of God. The Word of God is a love letter from God Almighty, The Father, Creator of all things, to all mankind; men, women, and children. Also like to point out the word, ” rest.” What is rest? Rest is the assurance of Salvation. In the Old Testament, in context, was talking about the Promised Land, Israel. Which is the physical symbol of Heaven, Salvation.
Study Of The Desert Rebellions
So how did the Israelites Rebel against God? What did they do that God considered rebellion? I know, most people who has read the Word of God at least one time through, knows the answer to this question. But this needs a second look, or else the author of the Book of Hebrews, who was inspired by the guidance of the Holy Spirit of God, would not have reminded the Jews as well as Gentiles, as a warning, of the desert rebellion. For God hates rebellion, and is teaching us the line not to cross with God the Father Himself. We will not be able to post so much Scripture. But you can read it for yourself. We will only give the highlights here…And even this version of what really happened in the desert are the highlights. I encourage you to really read this for yourself, and hear what the Holy Spirit is saying.
Grumbling And Complaining
First off: Exodus 13:17-17:6 Commemorates the crossing of the Red Sea, and all that entails, which also continues in Chapter 14. Chapter 15: the Song that Moses and the congregation of the Jews sang after the crossing of the Red Sea, and all of Israel were praising God Almighty for what His mighty hand has done. Which the Jews has witnessed, the impossible deliverance and miracles of God. And every eye has seen it. And Historically speaking, this event is also mentioned in Egypt, in Hieroglyph’s, that was just found a few years ago, detailing their superstitions of the whole event. For no one had in all of Egypt visited that very place where God made a way for the Jews to cross the Red Sea for 20 years after the fact. Chapter 15 also mentions the first rebellion against God, which was at the waters of Marah. Chapter 16 was another incident of rebellion. They grumbled and complained, about the lack of food and the variety there of, as they were thinking back how good they had it, with the abundance of water, and a variety of foods. Nostalgia is far better than the reality of yesterday. For they may have had those abundances, but what they have forgotten, was the fact that they were slaves. And looking back, thinking back lead them to rebel against the LORD, and because of their complaining, the LORD blessed them with a great abundance of Quail. So much, that they all got sick and the LORD in His anger of those grumbling and complaining, has killed many by a plague. So this in reality, was more like a curse and judgment rather than a blessing. A more detailed account is found in: Numbers 11:4-35. Chapter 17:1-6 deals with the congregation again grumbling and complaining for water, and again a more detailed account of this incident is found in: Numbers 20:1-13. By this point it has already been forty years in the desert. And many testing’s and judgments have come to pass. But before the Lord had judged His people, (and this is a very important factor,) He has given them His Laws, teaching them what God Almighty expects of them, from them, before hand, found in Exodus 19:1-23.
Here God Almighty had given the law to His people, establishing His Covenant, with His Treasured Possessions, the Jews, At Mount Sinai. For God Almighty does not ordain ignorance, but rather knowledge and understanding, just like our responsible, loving, mentally sane parents who also has laid the ground rules in the household. So also does the LORD. And of coarse in Exodus 20:1-17 are the “Ten Commandments” of the LORD as well as other various laws that can be found in: Exodus; Leviticus; Numbers and Deuteronomy.
Numbers 10:11-12:16. In Chapter 10:11-36, deals the Israelites leaving Mount Sinai. Chapter 11 Deals with the Grumbling and complaining and the Lord consumed them who did, which were a few, with fire from LORD. And then the quail incident that we have already covered. Chapter 12. Miriam and Aaron were speaking and coming against Moses for something stupid as: Moses marring a Cushite woman, after the death of Moses first wife. And the Lord judged Miriam with leprosy. Aarons judgment comes later.
Worshipping False gods
God despises this. For He specifically mentions, that He is a jealous God, and does not hide that emotion toward us. He doesn’t even pretend, that this doesn’t bother Him. He makes it known, bluntly and does not apologize. It is mentioned many times. And one of them is found in:
“You shall have no other gods before Me. “You shall not make for yourself a carved image—any likeness of anything that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth; you shall not bow down to them nor serve them. For I, the LORD your God, am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children to the third and fourth generations of those who hate Me, but showing mercy to thousands, to those who love Me and keep My commandments.”
Playing the harlot, that which the Holy Word of God calls it. Or another words spiritual adultery which is idolatry, Going after other god’s. in short, anything that replaces God Himself is an idol. Anything placed above God Almighty is an idol.
Proverbs 6:20-27 Warning Against Adultery
“My son, keep your father’s commands (the word of God) and do not forsake your mother’s teaching (which is wisdom according to Proverbs 4:5-9) Bind them upon your heart forever; fasten them around your neck. When you walk, they will guide you; when you sleep, they will watch over you; when you awake, they will speak to you. For these commands are a lamp, this teaching is a light, and the corrections of discipline are the way to life, keeping you from the immoral woman, from the smooth tongue of the wayward wife. Do not lust in your heart after her beauty or let her captivate you with her eyes, for the prostitute reduces you to a loaf of bread, and the adulteress preys upon your very life. Can a man scoop fire into his lap without his clothes being burned?”
Described here, the adulteress, is the ways of the world. And continues on again in Proverbs 7. But I want to highlight the consequence of the worlds ways in:
“Now therefore, listen to me, my children; Pay attention to the words of my mouth: Do not let your heart turn aside to her ways, Do not stray into her paths; For she has cast down many wounded, And all who were slain by her were strong men. Her house is the way to hell, Descending to the chambers of death.”
God Almighty in His law told us all, not to worship other gods. His laws still stands. Here, He was warning the Israelites, to not practice what the people of the land of Canaan were doing. For God Almighty has chosen the Jews, to be a Holy people as He is Holy, in Deuteronomy 16:21-17:7. Also Deuteronomy 4:15-39 as Moses went up to Mount Sinai, the people worshipped a golden calf they fashioned, as they were waiting for Moses out of, grumbling and complaining and out of fear found in: Exodus 32:1-35. And Deuteronomy 9:7-29.
Fear And Unbelief
And when the Israelites finally came to the borders of the Promised Land, they were fearful. So they sent out scouts, and the scouts had come back with fearful reports. Caleb was the only one who wanted to take over the land as God Almighty has promised them, up to this point found in: Numbers 13. Also a more detailed account is found in: Deuteronomy 1:1-2:23. They did not subdue the land right then and there, because of doubt and unbelief. And doubt and unbelief still exist in Christ Jesus’ day, as it is written:
John 12:37-50 The Jews Continue in Their Unbelief
“Even after Jesus had done all these miraculous signs in their presence, they still would not believe in Him. This was to fulfill the word of Isaiah the prophet: “Lord, who has believed our message and to whom has the arm of the Lord been revealed?” For this reason they could not believe, because, as Isaiah says elsewhere: “He has blinded their eyes and deadened their hearts, so they can neither see with their eyes, nor understand with their hearts, nor turn—and I would heal them.” Isaiah said this because he saw Jesus’ glory and spoke about Him. Yet at the same time many even among the leaders believed in Him. But because of the Pharisees they would not confess their faith for fear they would be put out of the synagogue; for they loved praise from men more than praise from God.
Then Jesus cried out, “When a man believes in Me, he does not believe in Me only, but in the One who sent Me. When he looks at Me, he sees the One who sent Me. I have come into the world as a light, so that no one who believes in Me should stay in darkness.”As for the person who hears My words but does not keep them, I do not judge him. For I did not come to judge the world, but to save it. There is a Judge for the one who rejects Me and does not accept My words; that very word which I spoke will condemn him at the last day. For I did not speak of My own accord, but the Father who sent Me commanded Me what to say and how to say it. I know that His command leads to eternal life. So whatever I say is just what the Father has told Me to say.”
In Romans 9:30-10:4 deals with God Almighty the Father, who did not reject His Treasured Possessions, the Jews. Even though they had rejected Christ Jesus, the Son of God as their Messiah, due to unbelief. The day is coming when all Israel will be saved. That the spirit of blindness will be lifted off. Amen! Rebellion is the result of unbelief.
The LORD God Almighty the Father had warned the Jews in the desert, that when they entered the Promise Land, Do not forget the LORD, who brought them out of bondage and slavery of Egypt. He is still warning us Gentiles the same. Do not forget the Lord our God who delivered us out of the bondage of sins, death and the wrath of God; which is Hell. The wages of sin, transgressions, and iniquities. Obedience is commanded from the LORD, to the Jews, how much more to the Gentiles who has the full Word of God? Those who know better. Deuteronomy 4:23 & 8:20 deals with this important fact and issue. I need to highlight this important fact that the LORD our God has warned us all with, both Jews and Gentiles in the Lord, in:
“Then it shall be, if you by any means forget the LORD your God, and follow other gods, and serve them and worship them, I testify against you this day that you shall surely perish. As the nations which the LORD destroys before you, so you shall perish, because you would not be obedient to the voice of the LORD your God.”
Jeremiah Chapter 2-4 deals with unfaithful Israel. The unfaithfulness of all His children in General. In fact majority of the Book of Jeremiah deals with this issue as well as the judgment there after the warnings. And again, I encourage you to read these chapters for yourself.
And in: 1 Corinthians 10:11-13
“Now all these things happened to them as examples, and they were written for our admonition, upon whom the ends of the ages have come. Therefore let him who thinks he stands take heed lest he fall. No temptation has overtaken you except such as is common to man; but God is faithful, who will not allow you to be tempted beyond what you are able, but with the temptation will also make the way of escape, that you may be able to bear it.”
That is to confess sins committed if temptaion has overcome you as the Word of God promises in:
1 John 1:9
“If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.”
But in order to be cleansed, which is the blessing sought after here, we must first acknowledge our sins honestly, without compromise, and without justifying sins. And then repent. To turn away from our sins that we have committed, and turn to the Living Lord and His ways. This is the only way of escaping the judgment.
As we continue to read: 1 Corinthians 10:14-22: Flee from Idolatry
“Therefore, my beloved, flee from idolatry. I speak as to wise men; judge for yourselves what I say. The cup of blessing which we bless, is it not the communion of the blood of Christ? The bread which we break, is it not the communion of the body of Christ? For we, though many, are one bread and one body; for we all partake of that one bread. Observe Israel after the flesh: Are not those who eat of the sacrifices partakers of the altar? What am I saying then? That an idol is anything, or what is offered to idols is anything? Rather, that the things which the Gentiles sacrifice they sacrifice to demons and not to God, and I do not want you to have fellowship with demons. You cannot drink the cup of the Lord and the cup of demons; you cannot partake of the Lord’s table and of the table of demons. Or do we provoke the Lord to jealousy? Are we stronger than He?”
Or another word, you cannot serve two masters. You cannot serve self, which is idolatry in itself, and God. You cannot serve the world, by pleasing the flesh, at the same time serving God Almighty. And if you partake of communion, Christ Jesus’ body and bread, then therefore you partake in His death. The body of death, and the cup of suffering according to 1 Corinthians 11:23-26. And there are many more Scriptures that warns us about all this, throughout the whole entire infallible Word of God. And there is so much more that happened in the desert as well. And the final judgment of the desert wanderings and rebellions is found in: Numbers 14:1-44. And I want to highlight: Verses 11-23
Numbers 14:11-23 Moses Intercedes for the People
“Then the LORD said to Moses: “How long will these people reject Me? And how long will they not believe Me, with all the signs which I have performed among them? I will strike them with the pestilence and disinherit them, and I will make of you a nation greater and mightier than they.” And Moses said to the LORD: “Then the Egyptians will hear it, for by Your might You brought these people up from among them, and they will tell it to the inhabitants of this land. They have heard that You, LORD, are among these people; that You, LORD, are seen face to face and Your cloud stands above them, and You go before them in a pillar of cloud by day and in a pillar of fire by night. Now if You kill these people as one man, then the nations which have heard of Your fame will speak, saying, ‘Because the LORD was not able to bring this people to the land which He swore to give them, therefore He killed them in the wilderness.’
And now, I pray, let the power of my Lord be great, just as You have spoken, saying, ‘The LORD is longsuffering and abundant in mercy, forgiving iniquity and transgression; but He by no means clears the guilty, visiting the iniquity of the fathers on the children to the third and fourth generation.’ Pardon the iniquity of this people, I pray, according to the greatness of Your mercy, just as You have forgiven this people, from Egypt even until now.” Then the LORD said: “I have pardoned, according to your word; but truly, as I live, all the earth shall be filled with the glory of the LORD— because all these men who have seen My glory and the signs which I did in Egypt and in the wilderness, and have put Me to the test now these ten times, and have not heeded My voice, they certainly shall not see the land of which I swore to their fathers, nor shall any of those who rejected Me see it.”
And the Lord Changes not. He is still the same yesterday, today and forever. As the Word of God specifically states, that, “Heaven and earth will pass away, but My word will stand forever.” Mathew 24:35. And Jesus did not come to abolish the law, but to fulfill it. Matthew 5:17&18. And “that those who practice such things, (sin, rebellion,) will not inherit the Kingdom of God; Heaven; Salvation. Sin is sin and rebellion in short, is sin.
Romans 15:4 states:
“For everything that was written in the past was written to teach us, so that through endurance and the encouragement of the Scriptures we might have hope.”
His judgments still stands. There is no distinction between Jew or Gentile. We serve the same God of the Jews: Creator of Heaven and earth and the seas and everything in them. The One and Only, and there is non beside Him, who changes not. The same God who judged them, does likewise the Gentiles as well, in the same way. He is no respecter of persons. Disobedience to God Almighty is a direct sin against Him. One of the roots of disobedience is fear. One preacher had said, “fear tolerated is faith contaminated.” As the Word of God says specifically, found in:
“He who overcomes shall inherit all things, and I will be his God and he shall be My son. But the cowardly, unbelieving, abominable, murderers, sexually immoral, sorcerers, idolaters, and all liars shall have their part in the lake which burns with fire and brimstone, which is the second death.” (Hell)
God Almighty has warned us about fear in the context of disobedience, which is another reminder here. God Almighty had judged the Jews in the desert for these very things.
“Now the just shall live by faith; But if anyone draws back, (or is fearful) My soul has no pleasure in him.”
The Word of God gives us more glimpse like warnings. The rebellious versus the righteous. And I guarantee you that the rebellious will not inherit the kingdom of God as it is written:
Matthew 25:31-46 The Sheep and the Goats
“When the Son of Man comes in His glory, and all the holy angels with Him, then He will sit on the throne of His glory. All the nations will be gathered before Him, and He will separate them one from another, as a shepherd divides his sheep from the goats. And He will set the sheep on His right hand, but the goats on the left. Then the King will say to those on His right hand, ‘Come, you blessed of My Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world: for I was hungry and you gave Me food; I was thirsty and you gave Me drink; I was a stranger and you took Me in; I was naked and you clothed Me; I was sick and you visited Me; I was in prison and you came to Me.’ “Then the righteous will answer Him, saying, ‘Lord, when did we see You hungry and feed You, or thirsty and give You drink? When did we see You a stranger and take You in, or naked and clothe You? Or when did we see You sick, or in prison, and come to You?’ And the King will answer and say to them, ‘Assuredly, I say to you, inasmuch as you did it to one of the least of these My brethren, you did it to Me.’
Then He will also say to those on the left hand, ‘Depart from Me, you cursed, into the everlasting fire prepared for the devil and his angels: for I was hungry and you gave Me no food; I was thirsty and you gave Me no drink; I was a stranger and you did not take Me in, naked and you did not clothe Me, sick and in prison and you did not visit Me.’ “Then they also will answer Him, saying, ‘Lord, when did we see You hungry or thirsty or a stranger or naked or sick or in prison, and did not minister to You?’ Then He will answer them, saying, ‘Assuredly, I say to you, inasmuch as you did not do it to one of the least of these, you did not do it to Me.’ And these will go away into everlasting punishment, but the righteous into eternal life.”
Simply the symbolism for the goat used here, is independent and rebellious as the goat is by nature. God Almighty teaches us to dependant upon Him and obedient, for He is our only Hope, our only Provider and our only Help. He desires to be center of our lives and nothing else. The Lord Jesus died for our forgiveness of our transgressions, which are all rebellion in general, according to Isaiah 53:5. But that does not give us, license to continue in rebellion against the Lord, who are forgiven, who believes that Jesus is the God-Man, The Son of God. The LORD destroyed His Treasured Possessions in the desert because of their rebellions, which in turn will destroy us who persists on that same path. A people who has his full Word and through that, knows better.
